A never-ending political debate surrounds the relative value verses the relative impact of trade legislation. It seems that ever president in recent history has
attempted to fast-track such legislation. These attempts are consistently met with opposition from labor organizations and environmentalists alike. There are,
of course, both pros and cons of relaxed trade regulations. One positive is that Americans benefit from cheaper goods. Unfortunately, that benefit itself comes with a cost.
While there are obvious exceptions, the relaxation of trade restrictions almost inevitably results in the US importing more and more goods into our country and exporting less and less.
This is found at all levels of our economy. Even our food has been radically affected by relaxed trade restrictions. Indeed, in the years subsequent to the 1990s
the imports that we have allowed into the country have increased "an average of 7% each year, whereas exports grew an average rate of 4% during the same period, measured
in terms of trade value. The gap between imports and exports has widened, rising from a $0.5 billion to a $7.4 billion deficit between 1990 and 2007" (Johnson, 2008).
