was confined to the very rich, there was no mass production of cheaper copies to allow the poorer classes access to those designs, and whilst one could certainly observe particular
styles of dress which "came in" and "went out" amongst poorer people, this was usually the result of garments being handed down from mistresses to servants, and thereby making their
way to the servant girls families: "fashion" in rural hamlets, therefore, was usually at least a year behind the "fashion" of the affluent set in London or Paris.
Nowadays, not only do we have the manufacturing technology to churn out mass-produced copies of catwalk designs (on the streets within hours of the show, if necessary), there
is also a wide range of influences on the development of fashion trends, and young people have the opportunity, through modern communication technology, to check what is currently fashionable in
other areas of the world on a daily basis. Today, although we can certainly point to specific influences, such as catwalk collections, as playing a major part in influencing fashion
trends, it is also the case that consumers, manufacturers and related industries such as music and the mass media contribute to the development of fashion trends.
It is also important to remember that we are talking primarily about Western European fashion here: the current popularity of the "ethnic" trend, for instance, consists of
