Depression. Despite such problems there were still many who were immersed in the world of fashion whether buying, selling, or designing. In fact, as one author notes, in relationship to
a review on a book concerning advertising and the 30s, "Surprisingly...the ads of the 1930s reveal nothing of the hard times, painting instead an optimistic picture of affluent American family
life" (All-American Ads of the 30s, 2009). This applied to fashion as well. The following paper examines fashion of the 1930s, primarily in the United States. Fashion
in the 1930s As mentioned, the 1930s were a time of financial struggle for many people. But, still fashion seemed to move forward despite this fact. One author states the
following in relationship to this fact: "While 13 million unemployed crowded the job boards in dirty rags, the privileged class fluttered around Palm Beach, Biarritz and Monte Carlo like peacocks
in their frightfully stylish linen or seersucker suits or sporty sailor smocks and polos. In so doing, they pioneered fashions that married comfort with chic" (Daily News Record, 1999; 64).
During the 1930s, as seen in the previous quote, elements such as polo shirts emerged in the fashion of men. They began to wear more shirts with v-necks and
padded shoulders, which seem to emulate a very masculine appearance (Daily News Record, 1999; 64). Fashions began to incorporate baggy pants for men and also double breasted jackets (Daily News
Record, 1999; 64). In addition, inspiration came from sailors in outfits for children, men and women, and comfort began to truly appear in the clothing of the 30s (Daily News
