To many Americans used to seeing logos and name brand products on store shelves, the idea of counterfeit merchandise never crosses their minds. They are honest citizens. However, there are
groups of people who try to capitalize on anothers good name, and not only reap profits they do not deserve, but disparage the name of the company they are trying
to copy. Clearly, the counterfeiters are in it for the money, not to produce a quality product. Both the customer and owner of the brand get taken. Many people
do not realize the extent of the problem. When walking down New York City streets, for example, it is not unusual to see counterfeiters selling their wares. In fact, it
is almost acceptable. The vendors get many customers and are able to close shop in seconds as soon as it is thought a police man is coming down the street.
But counterfeiting clothing is a serious offense. Like the four owners described in the opening paragraph found out, it is not a small legal matter. The owners were charged with
forgery, possession of forgery devices, as well as criminal simulation (Marlowe A03). Despite the fact that they turned themselves in, they each faced sentences up to seven years if convicted
(A03). The business was rather sophisticated as it was able to produce clothing where it was hard for an ordinary person to tell the difference between their fakes and
the real thing (Marlowe A03). Further, they were able to work fast, producing about thirty garments every five minutes (A03). One can imagine that profits would have been high. Garments
