dressing for work to dressing for particular activities or occasions, everyone considers what they wear, even if they do not consider themselves someone who considers fashion. As one author notes, "Fashion...is a means of expression on a mass scale of solidarity and group identity" (Wilson, 2003; 178). The following paper examines this statement while also dividing the paper into various sections concerning fashion. The paper discusses fashion and personal identity, fashion and solidarity, and fashion and group identity. Fashion and Personal Identity Fashion, or put simply for individuals who do not think they consider fashion part of their life, what one wears, is a very personal issue. It is something that all people engage in so that they can feel good about themselves, look good, and somehow make a statement about who they are. This may make many envision how people put on certain clothing to stand out in a crowd, obviously making a statement, such as is the case with someone dressed in black leather pants and a black leather jacket. Or it could be an obvious statement from someone wearing very revealing clothing, or very expensive clothing. All people make a statement about themselves when wearing such clothing styles. Many may argue with this, claiming not everyone cares about what they wear as a form of presenting ones identity. Yet, even those who understatedly dress themselves in order to make either a conscious or a subconscious statement about who they are. For example, an individual who does not wish to be noticed may wear incredibly simple clothing in very subtle colors in order that they not really be noticed.
