PROMOTING FANTASY AS FAIRY TALES: CHILDREN AND FAIRY TALES The world would be very bleak indeed if children were not allowed to see a glimmer of hope, a chance that they could escape what to them are insurmountable odds in their young lives. Fairy tales or fantasy give them the escape necessary and the mindful insight to see that things do happen for the good. In fact, fairy tales give them the much needed emphasis to focus on making their own happiness, and that they need to be motivated to ensure that their lives turn out well. It is important to note that fairy tales are more appropriate for children in the long run than fantasy based worlds such as the muppets or Barney the dinosaur. These characters live in total bliss, with nothing ever going wrong, and with nothing happening to ever teach the children that the world is not always a happy place. Children are smart enough to know that their world is not the same as the story worlds to which they are introduced at an early age. Bruno Bettelheim, in his book The Uses of Enchantment, tells us "We must live by fictions--not just to find meaning in life but to make it bearable" (Bettelheim, PG, 1975). Bettelheim emphasizes that the most important thing we can do for our children is read fairy tales to them.
