Native Americans. In 1997, Frank Keating, Governor of Oklahoma, "designated as Oklahoma Treasures the five Native American ballerinas who were born there in the 1920s and went on to
achieve international renown-Yvonne Chouteau, Marjorie Tallchief, Maria Tallchief, Rosella Hightower, and Moscelyne Larkin."1 Its perhaps not surprising that there are many Native American ballet dancers, since dance is
a primary form of expression in the Native culture: "Native American identity is itself intertwined with the complexities of representation and illusion ... complexities of Indian identity have always been
tied to dance and display."2 The tradition of Native Americans dancing for others (outside their own culture) goes back to Buffalo Bills Wild West show and P.T. Barnums circus
extravaganzas.3 While it may not be the first thing we think of, its clear that "Indian Ballerinas ... [were] not an anomaly."4 Maria Tallchief may be the
best known of the American Indian ballerinas, not only because of her great artistry and beauty, but also because she was married to legendary choreographer George Balanchine, who created such
roles as the Firebird for her.5 The partnership went beyond simply the relationship between husband and wife: "The brilliant roles he choreographed for Tallchief ... and her virtuoso
