uniquely written story, and one that is often hard to follow, as it encompasses different time periods and is told by different characters. The characters, however, are all part of
the same family. The following paper examines the representation of the family in Faulkners tale. Family in "The Sound and the Fury" The members of the family that
the reader learns about, for the most part, are the three brothers and the one sister, Caddy. The story itself seems to revolved primarily around Caddy to some extent. She
is the bond that seems to hold the family together as they often seem lost and dysfunctional when considered apart from Caddy. This is seen, from the beginning, in
the chapter or section narrated by Benji, a mentally handicapped man in his thirties. In his narration the reader sees a great deal of hitting, and a great deal of
just simple arguing and disgruntled behavior between all the members of the family. There is the repeated urge for one character or another to stop their moaning and one gets
the impression that these people are just constantly bickering, doing nothing to really help one another out, and simply existing. There is no real sense that the family is really
strong in any respect, and there is no indication that the bonds are tight within this family. This changes when Caddy really appears in the story and she immediately shows
concern for Benjy. She is, in fact, the only character in the novel who does really care about him and as such is truly the nurturer and the positive character
within the family. She turns to Benjy and asks, "Did you come to meet me? Did you come to meet Caddy? What did you let him get his hands so
