primary foundation of the stories and the families are essentially founded within the character of the man in the family. In A Raisin in the Sun it is the son
of the eldest character and in American Beauty it is the father of the family. The following paper compares the character of Walter, from Hansberrys work, and Lester in American
Beauty. Family in A Raisin in the Sun and American Beauty Walter and Lester are both the "man" of the family in their particular story. Walter is the
oldest male and is a father and a husband as well as a son to the mother in the story and as such is the main figure. In the case
of Lester he is also the main male character and the primary breadwinner, as is also the case with Walter. They are, in many ways, the leaders of the family
and it is their responsibility to support the family and keep the family safe and stable. In both stories, however, the men are lost within their own particular search
for their identity. Lester is far older and has led a life that is clearly financially successful but now sees that his life is pointless. Walter wants to make the
kind of money people like Lester makes. He has all these schemes and dreams and he ultimately learns they are pointless, just as Lester sees his success as relatively pointless.
The men in these stories are also essentially a sort of catalyst for all the problems of the family. Because Walter wants to have a liquor store he essentially
loses most of the money his mother got for her husbands life insurance. The family looked up to him hoping he would do good and protect and support them. He
