learns how to develop intimate relationships by experiencing this kind of relationship with parents, siblings and other family members. Intimacy is defined as including things such as: affection; altruism, solidarity,
openness, commitment, loyalty, trust, honesty and a heightened sense of the importance of the relationship (Fallon and Bowles, 1997). Parents play the most important role in the childs process of
socialization. Numerous researchers have investigated the effect of intimate family relationships on adolescent. This is the age when so many youngsters are in conflict with their families. Fallon and Bowles
investigated whether or not family structure and/or family functioning variables could predict the amount of intimate time adolescents spend with their family members and peers. As these investigators reported, previous
research has concluded that family structure variables have a definite impact on the interactions between family members. Other researchers have linked family structure variables with both the amount of time
and the quality of time adolescents spend interacting with each other (Fallon and Bowles, 1997). The results of the Fallon and Bowles study suggested that family functioning and
sibling density were the most influential in determining the amount of intimate time males spent with others. The structure of the family played the greatest role in determining how much
intimate time adolescent females spent with parents, siblings and peers; it was a negative correlation which means these factors could predict females would spend very little intimate time with family.
