has been my experience that consideration of the patients family is fundamental to good nursing practice because family care giving and support are essential to the maintaining the health of
the patient receiving dialysis therapy. It has been estimated that 65 million adult Americans are engaged in providing in providing healthcare services to their ill and aging family members
(Byers, Wicks and Beard, 2011). Typically, family caregivers are women, and the stress entailed in their responsibilities in caring for relatives who are undergoing dialysis frequently leads to depression and
diminished health status for the caregiver (Byers, Wicks and Beard, 2011). End stage renal disease (ESRD) affects African Americans to a disproportionate degree; however, the study conducted by Byers, Wicks
and Beard (2011) found that African American caregivers displayed higher levels of self-efficacy and also had lower levels of psychological distress. The researchers speculate that these factors may derive
from the strength provided by their families and their religious faith (Byers, Wicks and Beard, 2011). The studys participants reported five health promotion behaviors that they employed. These behaviors focused
on "nutrition, exercise, modifying stress, spirituality/faith and following physician orders and taking medication as ordered" (Byers, Wicks and Beard, 2011, p. 428). Within my dialysis unit, we have found
that the concept of family that is most helpful to nursing practice is one that considers not only members of the immediate nuclear family, but also takes in consideration the
support available via extended family members who may, or may not, also live in the home. For example, in the study conducted by De Paula, Nascimento and Rocha (2008), two
