Facial injuries can result in dental trauma, requiring care. Dentist can be part of the first line of care for patients requiring immediate services, and can also be a part of groups of health care professionals supporting the reporting of family violence and the documentation of injuries that result from violence in the home. Dentists and their support teams may recognize repeated injuries or dental traumas as a component of mandatory reporting for suspected domestic violence and child abuse. Significance of the Problem Statistics from the Canadian Centre for Justice suggest that the problem of family violence is pervasive and problematic from social, criminal justice and medical perspectives (1). Family violence results in reportable injuries that can have lasting impacts for the victims. Statistics relate the impacts of family violence for both the victims of domestic violence and the victims of child abuse. According to the CCJ, a study conducted in 2004 related the fact that 7 percent of the population of individuals over the age of 15 are in unions that result in spousal violence (2). Though children under the age of 18 account for approximately 21 percent of the population, they also comprise 21 percent of the total number of victims of physical assault in the home and 61 percent of the reported victims of sexual assault (3). Of the reported types of physical abuse, 34 percent are injuries suffered to the head and neck, resulting in the need for medical interventions and testing.
