"slapping, pushing, shoving and throwing things," rather often involve more serious violence, such as "kicking, punching, biting, hitting with an object, beating up the other or using a knife or
gun."3 When incidence rates garnered from statistics are translated into national terms, it indicates that spousal abuse occurs in roughly 3 million American homes on an annual basis.4 This
means that the average person, who is in a long-standing relationship with another adult, has a much greater chance of being assault in their own home than on the street,
even with in a high incidence crime area. Cultural factors associated with the prevalence of domestic violence Cross-cultural studies in the US suggest that the "low status of women and
patriarchal norms" are both contribute to the prevalence of wise abuse.5 An interesting social factor is the statistical fact that the states that have the highest rates of wife abuse
are also the ones in which "legal, political, occupational, and educational status of women is high," but it is also prevalent in the states "where the patriarchal norms favoring
