take the form of spousal abuse, child abuse, abuse of one sibling by another, elder abuse, even the abuse of parents by children. Lets consider each one briefly. There has been a great deal written about spousal abuse, which usually takes the form of a husband abusing his wife, either verbally, sexually or physically. Abusers have a pattern: they explode in violence, often fueled by the use of drugs or alcohol, beat their wives to varying degrees (anything from a slap to a vicious beating requiring hospitalization); after which they are contrite, bring home gifts such as flowers and candy, and solemnly swear this will never happen again. But of course it does; something triggers the mans rage and once again, he beats the woman. Much of this has to do with the lingering perception in society that women are things, not people, and that they "belong" to their husbands. As long as this belief persists, spousal abuse will take place. The womens movement has, in some cases, succeeded in making people aware of womens suffering; in other cases, it has simply enraged men who, naturally, then take it out on the women in their lives. The twisted thinking that equates violence and physical injury with love is incomprehensible to most people, but the facts are undeniable: thousands of women suffer untold agony at the hands of the men who "love" them. There are also cases where women beat their husbands, but these are statistically much rarer. Men are often the aggressors when children are abused as well, particularly if the abuse is sexual. Fathers, stepfathers, uncles and brothers who sleep with their daughters/nieces/sisters have all been reported.
