family values really are and why they are important. Discussion The first thing to do may be to clarify what is generally meant by "values." These are "deeply held personal
beliefs, desires and ideals. They are a filter for perceiving the world and acting in it" (Values, ethics and character, 2007). That is, people understand the world and decide what
they are going to do according to their values. Values "determine decisions and behavior" (Values, ethics and character, 2007). If a person values loyalty and honesty, for example, he will
be faithful to his friends and family, and truthful to them (Values, ethics and character, 2007). However, values may also conflict: for instance, "honesty and loyalty may conflict when telling
the truth means getting a friend in trouble" (Values, ethics and character, 2007). The next logical step in the process is to apply values to the family structure, which of
course is where the phrase originates. But it is much more complex than it seems to be when its used politically. One source suggests that true family values are similar
to the mission statements corporations use to help their employees understand the companys goals, as well as how to obtain them (Put it in writing, 2007). Families can do the
same thing, developing a "written set of values, mission statement and code of conduct" (Put it in writing, 2007). Such a statement of values will help a family develop character,
