are something that is aligned with a mirage of sorts. Those families, some contend, never really existed. The film Natural Born Killers mocks the idea that the families were all goodness and light. Rather, the 1950s families lived under a veil of secrecy, hiding addiction and incest. Today, families may be more fragmented than ever, but some contend that at least they are healthier. Families today are healing and in many ways, and family life is better because of it. Part of the problem with the negative discussion about family is that there is a changing definition of just what a family is composed of. Some see the family as declining but Wright and Jagger (1999) point out that while there is much talk about problems as attributable to the declining family structure, the same discussion came about during the 1890s. Today, the discussion goes to the decline of marriage and family values pointing to the high rate of divorce and out of wedlock births. In the 1890s it might have been something else, but the end result is that the family is blamed for everything. Today, close to 35% ("Unmarried Childbearing," 2006) of women having babies are unmarried. Of course, it is much more acceptable for families to be "blended" or for couples to have babies out of wedlock now. In fact, to some extent, Hollywood exacerbates this situation. Celebrities like Madonna and Kate Moss have become pregnant prior to getting married. This to some extent has set the trend where older, unmarried career women are vying to have children through artificial insemination.
