While this form of custody after divorce was once common, in many states courts are moving away from awarding sole custody to one parent and are moving towards enlarging the role of fathers in their childrens lives (Anonymous, 2002). Sole custody most often to the mother, but can be awarded to the father when the mother is judged unfit to have custody. Many parents opt for joint custody, which usually works out to some system of shared physical custody, six months with one parent and six months with the other. "Birds Nest custody" is a new innovation in child custody in which the children remain in the family home and the parents take turns moving in and out (Anonymous, 2002). It is difficult for families to cope, in particular, when parents remarry and there are stepparents and stepsiblings to get along with. Experts offer guidelines that can help these "blended" families cope. First of all, it is recommended that the new marriage should come first -- "If the two leading partners in a family cannot communicate and demonstrate loving, behavior, then the family cant survive" (David, 2000, p. 40). Stepparents are advised to make it clear that they are not attempting to replace the biological parent, and, furthermore, that they should be accepting of the ex-spouse as being a part of the childrens lives.
