Prata and Mara Selvini Palazzoli. They published their seminal paper in 1980 but they had already been offering seminars on their techniques of hypothesizing [sic], circularity, and neutrality (Campbell, 1999).
The early Milan Approach included those three techniques, hypothesizing [sic], circularity, and neutrality along with team working and interventions (Campbell, 1999). It was not many years, in fact, by
the mid-1980s that this original approach and ideology were changed forever. The emergence of constructivism and social constructionism change the entire field of family therapy. Both these concepts led therapists
to believe they were not really discovering the underlying dynamic process in the family or the family relationships (Campbell, 1999). Further, the philosophy changed in terms of the therapists
role in the family. The family should not be viewed as a cybernetic system that the therapist observed. Instead, the therapist became a part of the system being observed (Campbell,
1999). In other words, these newer perspectives recognized that the therapist influenced the family dynamics. The expansion of the concept of systemic beyond family therapy also impacted the Milan approach.
The systemic canon has been used with individuals, couples and organizations (Campbell, 1999). So many different ideas and techniques emerged since the Milan Groups original thoughts that a new term
needed to be devised for this approach so the Milan approach today is sometimes referred to as Post-Milan to indicate the impact of these many other emerging ideas on the
original ideas of this group. The process of the early Milan approach included a presession, session, intersession, intervention and postsession discussion (Boscolo, et al., 1987). The team developed their initial
hypotheses about the family members in the presession. During the session, therapists validated, modified or changed their hypothesis. The team discussed the modified hypothesis and designed interventions which was delivered
