Is Structural Function Theory more relevant today? Perhaps. "Yes," in that this theory defines "family" as a "social system that ensures the maintenance and survival of society by meeting certain functional requirements of society; but, "no," in that this theory, as first proposed by Talcott Parsons, focuses "family" as meaning a traditional nuclear family and todays society requires a broader definition ("Structural Functional Theory"). 2. How does System Theory, in a family context, apply to alternative parenting styles? Bowen family systems theory is defined as a "theory of human behavior that views the family as an emotion unit and uses systems thinking to describe the complex interactions in the unit" (Bowen). In the general lexicon, "alternative parenting styles" appears to mean a way of parenting that is divergent from the mainstream norm, such as gay or lesbian parents. Bowen family systems theory encompasses alternative parenting styles because it can be applied to a variety of social configurations, as each "concept in Bowen theory applies to non-family groups, such as work and social organizations," as well as traditional nuclear families (Bowen). 3. How does family assessment influence health-seeking behaviors among individuals? Assessment is the "first step in the nursing process" and it is used to "identify the familys complex structure and evolving functioning" (Servonsky and Gibbons 51).
