FEMINIST, CONFLICT AND LBGT Upholding what structural functionalists contend to be the "moral code of society" (Goode 1969:38-47) has become an undesirable objective for feminists whose primary focus is to carve out a more satisfying existence over and above the mandated roles of wife and mother. Priorities began to take shape in the middle of the twentieth century that had never before been addressed. Women were prepared to put all aspects of their lives on hold as a means by which to fulfill their professional desires; however, this was not to bode well with the male gender, who was confused at the intensity with which women were forging ahead in the workplace (Kendall, Murray and Lindan 2003:3). Along with this newfound freedom came an unexpected consequence: higher divorce rates. Because women were finding themselves capable of being self-sufficient, there came a new outlook on relationships and the roles each gender played; as women became more independent, they were less inclined to rely upon their husbands for security (Goode 1969). Understanding the contrasting principal factors that underlie the structural functionalism is well appreciated through Marxs conflict theory, a concept that dictates a persons place upon the socioeconomic latter by the political and economic structure of the specific society in which he or she lives (Kendall et al 2003:2). ...
