individual will be the family, that history has a tendency to repeat itself that there is a movement of families though time both horizontally as well as vertically and that
each member of the family need to retain a separateness from the family as well as a connectedness. Family systems are open, meaning they can be affected by their
environment and in order to survive they need this interaction. Under family systems theory families are a coherent unit with the sum of the whole being greater than the sum
of the parts. This leads to a complex system (Ackerman, 1985). Where the system becomes a closed system there is an isolation form external factors which prevents the ability to
develop and grow, although changes will create stress and they may or may not adapt. Where there is the need to adapt there will be feedback loops form the
information processing function (Ackerman, 1985). Negative feedback may not be negative in terms of impact, but is feedback resisting change and seeking to maintain the status quo. Positive feedback
loops may result in changes and mutation to the status quo. Amplification of this feedback can result in some difficult changes such as separation and the breakdown of subsystems. This
will continue until a new point of equilibrium is reached (Ackerman, 1985). In looking at the case where there has been events leading to mass unemployment and the
need for agency intervention due to increasing family problems such as separations and abuse of a partner family systems theory can be seen as giving one perspective on why the
family problem are resulting form the sudden unemployment faced by at least one member of each family, if not both. The position is one of change, and as
