learns that Gregor has turned into a bug. It is not realistic, but the interpersonal relationships that are changed as a result appear to be. In fact, the relationships are
transformed perhaps but they were problematic to begin with. His relationship with his sister and parents are somewhat estranged. In any event, it is the metamorphosis that creates the conflict.
Still, it could have been anything else. If Gregor had gotten AIDS, would anything be different? While Kafka uses an unlikely if not impossible scenario, the point is that the
relationships are quite interesting and worth exploring in a serious manner. Bloom (1988) suggests that what Gregor wakes up to on that particular morning when the book begins is
the truth of his whole life. His ordinary consciousness seems to have lied to him about himself and the explosive first sentence shakes him out of the lie that has
become his "habitual self- understanding into the nightmare of truth" (1988, p.20). This dream of sorts reveals a reality with the use of a horrible metaphor in that he is
shown as a disgusting creature who is shut out of human life (1988). While subject to interpretation, the beginning is rather startling. It is a wake up call for
anyone living in disillusionment. How many people go about their business and do not examine their lives and the relationships in it? The first section of the book concerns the
discovery of what the protagonist is. One could say that this is largely a symbolic work, especially in the first pages, but others have suggested that the work defies explanation
