Latin America As stated, much of the pattern of family relationships common in the 16th century in Latin America is reflected in the
family structure that persists today. Mothers were important in the family, but females in general were valued less than males. This has been common in much of the
world, as women have been regarded as less able to perform the heavy chores required by daily life in pre-industrial times and always have been charged with caring for the
children that only they can produce. Though mothers were important in the family structure, unmarried daughters or older widows were less so. It was the responsibility of the
family to care for them and to ensure that their basic life needs were met, but meeting that responsibility to these unmarried women also was a drain on the familys
