families to the problems Sonny and Gregor Samsa face. Discussion We can argue that Gregors family has a much more difficult problem to deal with than Sonnys: Sonny has been
arrested for possession of drugs, but Gregor has been transformed into a giant bug, presumably a cockroach. It is probably asking too much of anyone to accept a roach as
one of the family, even though they try to do so, at least at first. But as Gregor begins to lose his humanity, they too lose theirs and finally end
up denying that the insect was ever Gregor to begin with (Kafka). That makes it easier to deal with their decision, which is to try and get Gregor out of
the house: "We must try to get rid of it, the sister now said decisively to the father, for the mother, in her coughing fit, was not listening to anything.
It is killing you both" (Kafka). Critics have argued for decades over whether Gregor really changes into a cockroach, or if the whole thing is a fable, but thats not
the real point. The point is that Kafka used this extreme situation to examine human relations, and what happens to people under great stress, particularly when the stress also involves
a violation of social "norms." Some have suggested that Gregors "metamorphosis" is a metaphor for alcoholism or drug abuse or perhaps a venereal disease; some condition that would bring shame
on the family. It is a test to see how they deal with it and here, after struggling to accept what has happened, they finally give up. They cannot control
their revulsion in the presence of the insect and as Gregor becomes less and less human, they are able to convince themselves that the thing never was Gregor to begin
