health issues related to obesity. Erin has been diagnosed with Type II diabetes and the two girls have experienced bullying in school as a result of their weight
issues. The focus of the education program is based on their nursing diagnosis of altered nutrition and the need to address their eating habits, disordered behaviors around food and
the creation of strategies to improve health through weight reduction. Description of Educational Need The need for an educational program for
this family extended from their report of both health problems related to obesity and emotional issues, including the fact that both girls reported being bullied as a result of their
weight. Erin noted that her youngest daughters problems in regards to her weight and bullying have led to her inability to effectively express her emotions and both girls have
stopped participating in after-school functions and public events because of weight gain. Erin reported that the weight issues for her daughters has resulted in a notable change in their
affect, including the girls not being as outgoing or happy as they used to be. In addition, Erin noted that the family in general needs to improve
their functioning around food, including monitoring their fat and sugar in-take and improving their diet as a whole. The whole family has identified a desire to improve their diet
and exercise as a means of weight reduction. The family has some distinct strengths and weaknesses that should be taken into consideration when developing a health education plan.
