subjected to corporal punishment are more likely to repeat the violence, become bullies, suffer from low self esteem and have their school performance suffer. The violence can also become cyclic
with the victim becoming an offender. In some counties, such as Sweden, corporal punishment has been banned and there has been investment in educational programs to aid parents and provide
support for parents to use non violent methods of behaviour management. These issues are all discussed. Text The subject of corporal punishment within the family environment can be very emotive,
while it has been banned in some countries it is an ongoing common practice in other countries, where it is generally accepted. There have been many studies concerning the long
term impact of corporal punishment on children, including the psychosocial, psychological and physical impacts of the practice. It is only by understanding what is meant by corporal punishment, how it
occurs and the potential outcome that practical and viable strategies for reducing the negative impacts can be developed. Cohen (1984) defines corporal punishment as a type of punishment which is
painful and inflicted intentionally, usually by hitting or striking a child as a physical penalty with the motivation of instilling discipline and the punishment implemented by a person in authority,
usually a parent. Forms of corporal punishment can vary; including spanking, whippings, flogging, beatings and many other forms of physical punishment it may take place anytime, anywhere including inside and
