one of the most powerful elements of life which guide characters and also somewhat hinder their actions. The following paper examines the conflicts within families and the resolution of those
conflicts within "Othello" by Shakespeare, "Oedipus the King" by Sophocles, and "A Dolls House" by Ibsen. Othello The greatest tension revolves around Othello and Desdemona, a new family.
He is deeply in love with her, and she with him. But, the character of Othello, because of envy and anger, plays on the emotions of Othello and starts him
thinking that Desdemona is being unfaithful. This tension becomes more and more intense until Othello kills his wife, despite her protestations that she is innocent. Desdemona almost seems to accept
this fate for she loves her husband greatly and is at his ultimate mercy, no matter his decision. Her last words are "But while I say one prayer!" (Shakespeare V
ii). Othello, discovers that he was wrong, that his wife was not unfaithful, too late. When he makes this realization he chooses to kill himself rather than continue life without
his beloved. In this the resolution of the conflicts between the two ends in death. Oedipus In the story of Oedipus the King we see how Oedipus
has heard rumors about the how his new wifes (his mothers) husband was killed and he is investigating it. He slowly finds hints that he may well have killed the
man, and then he slowly finds little bits of information that indicate he was adopted and the man he killed may have been his father. In this we see that
Oedipus does not hide from the possibility that he is involved. He does not give up seeking truth, but rather continues to find information even if that information will indicate
