family has always been economically, socially and emotionally supportive, but excesses and a lack of accountability served as the foundation for some tough lessons.
As a child, I was taught that simply being male and a part of my family warranted considerable attention. My parents aimed at giving me every
opportunity, as well as every possession I wanted. I grew up the youngest child and only son of a suburban upper middle class family in South River, NJ.
My parents were able to provide a home for me and my older sister, as well as give us access to a beach home in South Seaside Park, NJ.
My role as the youngest child meant my parents were more likely to make excuses for my behaviors. At the same time, I was the only son of a
proud Greek family, and so played an important role in how the family was perceived by the outside world. My parents taught
me the importance of taking pride in our Greek heritage and we often traveled during summer vacations to Greece. My mother was a religious woman who went to church
throughout my childhood. I was also expected to attend Greek school in hopes of learning the language, but to my parents disappointment, I never did. My parents marriage and
the family they created around it served as a foundation for my life and their stability and cultural focus was both endearing and challenging. I sometimes felt it was
