the role of spirituality and religion, for lesser dominant countries such as Romania the assessment may be aided by comparing the country to one that is better known, such as
the US. Romania is a country located in Southeast Europe, having boarders with many other eastern European countries, including Ukraine, Serbia, Bulgaria and Hungary (CIA, 2011). The country, like its
neighbours have been influenced by its past including the communist past. The country was, and remains relativity poor however family patterns have changed while attitudes towards kinship remain strong.
In the past many Romanians would be subjected to an arranged married, usually arranged though a matchmaker, with the brides parents providing a dowry that was traditionally made up of
items such as linens (Anonymous, 2011). Weddings were large social events, with many family members having an active role in the ceremonies; not just the bride and groom. This reflects
the importance of marriage as a life long commitment, and the importance of the success of the marriage to the local community (Anonymous, 2011). Today marriages remain the mainstays of
families, and while many of the older generations were married through the arranged marriage process it is now usual for the young people getting married to choose their own partners
(Anonymous, 2011). While this may have moved forward, the marriage ceremony and traditions which emphasize the importance of the institution. Many of the traditional elements of the marriage ceremony remain;
including the elaborate braiding of the brides hair, the shaving of the grooms beard to symbolise leaving behind his bachelor days and both the bride and groom asking forgiveness of
