to reach the scale of the earlier event. This paper discusses the plight of children and families during the Depression. Discussion Most of the facts about the Great Depression are
well known. It was precipitated in large part by the stock market crash of 1929 which in turn was caused by a situation not too dissimilar from todays events: all
the money in society had gone to the top. With little money in circulation, the demand for goods dropped dramatically, so companies cut back production, throwing thousands out of work.
With no money in circulation, the middle class began to disappear and so the entire structure of society caved in, leaving people struggling desperately to keep their homes, feed their
families, and find new jobs. When the Depression was at its worst, as much as 25% of the workforce was jobless; there were thousands of applicants for every job, no
matter what it was. One of the best portrayals of what life was like at the time, and the choices it forced on families, is The Grapes of Wrath
by John Steinbeck. The novel follows the adventures of the Joad family as they head for California and the promise of work in the fields. It describes the tent cities,
the illness and death, the hardships and most of all the despair of this particular era of American history: "How can you frighten a man whose hunger is not only
in his own cramped stomach but in the wretched bellies of his children? You cant scare him--he has known a fear beyond every other" (Steinbeck, 2002, p. 237). The fear
