in old television shows. People equate family life with images seen in such shows as Ozzie and Harriet or Leave it to Beaver. In these shows the mothers never worked,
the men worked and were successful yet always had time for the children. Families talked and spent a great deal of time together. Although these television shows were clearly not
an accurate depiction of average family life in the 50s and the 60s they do have a tendency to demonstrate truths that were a part of the family during those
decades. Families did eat together more often than they do today, children were generally more respectful of their elders, families did things together, and there always seemed to be time
for one another. With that in mind the following paper examines the families of the past as compared to the families of today, discussing the family values. Families:
Then and Now First and foremost, whatever present day society has a tendency to believe, the family life of the 1950s and the 1960s were not perfect and strong family
values were not seen throughout America. And, for the most part people envision family life in the 50s and 60s based on what they saw, or see, in television. One
author notes, importantly, that, "There is no medium more powerful than television in shaping the way people view family life" (Jayson, 2006). As such what is seen on television cannot
be used as the basis for truth concerning family life in the 50s and 60s. However, this paper is going on the premise that in many ways family time was
