deal of fear surrounding the potential for abuse and many therapists try to uncover early memories of abuse. Such practices have led to unfair allegations. Why? The memories were not memories at all but suggestions made by the therapists that would manifest as memories. This is also something referred to as confabulation. How is this possible? While it may seem odd that many people have remembered purposely repressed memories, it is something that was actually becoming a common occurrence and part of a trend. Prior to the early 1990s, the concept was not generally discussed, but during the late 1980s and early 1990s, both children and adults had recalled memories of violent sexual abuse (Hickey, 2003). It was precisely because it was a common occurrence that the phenomena was labeled as False Memory Syndrome or FMS (Hickey, 2003). It is interesting to note that Sigmund Freud actually supported the idea of false memories (Hickey, 2003). While he might have first come up with the idea of repressed memories, he would later claim that they were based on fantasy and not reality (Hickey, 2003). In other words, even Freud who perhaps first came up with the repressed memory idea would later vie toward the idea that the memories were fabricated. They were based on the wish of the individuals, and not an actual event (Hickey, 2003). How do false memories arise? Usually, a person does not just have a revelation about a past event. Rather, a therapist might make a suggestion and influence the creation of a false memory (Hickey, 2003). A therapist may look at present symptoms such as a sexual dysfunction and ask the individual if he or she was sexually abused.
