Hemingways love of nature and of fishing is legendary. For Hemingway, nature was his religion. In those moments of quiet on his fishing boat, his faith in humanity
would be restored. Those times when all that was on his mind was making the great catch renewed his hope in the beauty of life. This is captured
beautifully in the relationship between the aging Cuban fisherman Santiago and his young companion Manolin. Santiago has become the joke of his village because he has taken his boat
out for more than 80 days in his quest to catch a giant (and extremely elusive) marlin. Only Manolin is supportive of Santiagos efforts. He sees how the
pursuit of this marlin affects the old man. It keeps him young and vibrant. Those times together on the boat with the sea and each other for company
strengthened within man and boy their faith in themselves, their love for each other, and their hope their lives have meaning. Santiago is not deterred by the jokes the townspeople
made at his expense. He believed in himself and his abilities, and that patience was all it took to achieve his goal. The boy was intrigued by Santiagos
resolve and had faith this man he admired would come through. On one of their early fishing expeditions, Manolin reveals why his father had prohibited him to continue fishing
with Santiago: "It was papa made me leave. I am a boy and I must obey him. I know, the old man said. It is quite normal. He
hasnt much faith. No, the old man said. But we have. Havent we? Yes, the boy said" (Hemingway 10-11). With the support of his young friend, Santiago
