has been an issue. We decry the relatively low salaries for those charged with attending to our children for many of their waking hours as they teach them the
foundations of knowledge, skills and information they will need to be able to synthesize new knowledge at a later date. Certainly teachers never receive salaries that reflect their worth
and value, but with more than 6.2 million teachers in the US (Special Edition, 2004) few if any local school districts are able to increase salaries much beyond current levels.
High-profile individuals in high-profit industries command much higher salaries. Movie stars, record artists and widely known sports figures comprise a list that
must make us wonder about our national and personal priorities. A movie star can make $60 million for only a few weeks work - loosely used and far removed
from most peoples reality of work - on the hope that the movie being made will be the next box office leader in terms of revenues. There are many
fewer of these names than there are teachers. Pay Inequities Horsely and Stokes (2005) studied the situation in Australia to determine "that teachers
are paid substantially less for comparable work and responsibilities compared to the private sector in the job families analyzed" (p. 94). We hardly need studies to point that out...
In 2004 in the US, the "national average was $44,700" (Special Edition, 2004), with California ($54,300) and South Dakota ($31,300) comprising the extremes. Factoring in shorter hours; definite
Christmas vacation time; and most of the summer completely off translates these figures to higher numbers, but obviously still far short of a Jennifer Aniston or George Clooney salary.
