Todays global economic climate favors free trade. On the one hand, free trade sounds like a good policy until it is realized that it leads to huge discrepancies in wealth
leaving some nations very wealthy and other nations in abject poverty (Fair Trade Coffee Company, 2009). Fair trade attempts to correct the injustices found in free trade. An example
with coffee will demonstrate the differences between free and fair trade. In the 1990s, the price of coffee beans on the global commodity markets plummeted. Coffee bean growers in South
America and Mexico were forced to sell the product at a price below what it cost them to produce it (Fair Trade Coffee Company, 2009). The fair trade
system guarantees producers a minimum price for these products. The price allows them to be sustainable (Food for Thought, 2012). Fair trade also gives them a premium they can use
to pay for development projects. Coffee beans are not grown on huge plantations, most are grown on small family farms. Individual farmers usually join a producer cooperative with other small
farmers and sell to Fair Trade buyers cooperatives who must follow certain rules (Food for Thought, 2012). Cadburys gained Fairtrade certification for Cadbury Dairy Milk, the top selling chocolate
bar in the UK (Fairtrade Foundation, London, 2009). This will triple the sales of cocoa farmers in Ghana. At the same time, it will open the window for thousands
of other farmers. The Chief Executive of Cadburys, Todd Stitzer, commented that this deal will improve the living conditions for farmers and their communities (Fairtrade Foundation, London, 2009). Cadburys
