how a sophisticated and accomplished society like Germany could descend into the barbarism that was Nazi Germany. This paper explores some of the theories that explain how Hitler and the
National Socialists were able to take complete control in such a short time. Discussion One of the most compelling theories advanced recently by many scholars is that the two world
wars were in fact a single conflict, with a twenty-year cease fire between the two halves. This theory helps explain why Germany was willing to take up arms again despite
having lost over two million young men in the first war. Its also widely acknowledged that the rampant inflation in Germany, as well as the resentment over the reparations demanded
by the Treaty of Versailles fueled the anger that made it possible for Hitler to come to power. But even so, these facts alone dont explain his extraordinary popularity or
the eagerness with which his horrific ideas were embraced. The situation in Germany after World War I was confused and bleak: an entire generation of young men was simply
gone, inflation was so high that a loaf of bread cost millions of marks, France was insisting on heavy reparations, and the entire nation, possibly the proudest on earth, was
