the nervous system is developed and these are related to the control of behavior (Laberge, 2006). Adaptive patterns are influenced by both the temperament and the environment (Laberge, 2006). In
fact, psychologists tend to agree that temperament and environment have the greatest influence on personality development (Laberge, 2006). This is at the root of the nature vs. nurture debate. The
nature is the temperament where there is a connection between genetic traits and behavior and the nurture is related to what happens in the environment (Laberge, 2006). This debate may
never be completely decided but one thing that professionals agree about is that high quality parenting is a critical factor in a childs personality development (Laberge, 2006). Character is described
as "the set of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral patterns learned from experience that determines how a person thinks, feels, and behaves" (Laberge, 2006). Character continues to evolve throughout ones life
but the foundation is established in childhood and is directly related to both genetic traits and experiences in early life (Laberge, 2006). Authors and experts consistently cite Eriksons psychosocial stages
of development to explain personality development (Laberge, 2006). One of the things Erikson said was that a child who was unable to successfully resolve the conflict at each stage of
