danger and adventure. They often associate pirates with film and with novels too. But, many people seem to think that pirates perhaps did not even exist, that they were just
simple men with convoluted legends that grew through time. The following paper examines how and why pirates were very real, and the legends were often quite real as well.
Pirates "The history of piracy dates back more than 3000 years, but its accurate account depends on the actual meaning of the word pirate" (Wilczynski, 2004). In ancient times
a pirate was someone who could also attack inland, into maritime cities and thus were going against the law. They were renegades who could attack anyone in or near the
ocean. The definition we normally think of is one that is associated with thieves on the sea. We imagine men who did not follow the laws of any country or
king and men who attacked other ships, stealing anything they could and otherwise being very disreputable characters. And, one particular proof that exists, which argues that pirates were very real,
is the application of international laws that actually involved anti-pirate legislation (Wilczynski, 2004). "This is due to the fact that most pirate acts were committed outside the borders of any
country" (Wilczynski, 2004). In addition, we find that many times a government or a leader would actually employ the help of pirates for their own cause. "The most popular
form was to give a license to a private sailor to attack enemy shipping on behalf of a specific king - Privateer" (Wilczynski, 2004). In such cases if a pirate
was caught they would be tried, regardless of their affiliation with any nobility or government. The fact that they may have an agreement with a country or leader meant nothing
