one typically dwells on - simply because of the type of products and services offered to clients. Although the death care industry, as it is called, isnt necessarily one that
people automatically talk about as they would energy or telecommunications, it is a multi-billion dollar industry that employees a large number of people. Once you actually get into the statistics,
you become aware of how large this industry actually is. In the U.S. alone there are approximately 23,000 funeral homes; approximately 700 casket
stores and thousands more suppliers to the trade such as cemeteries, vault companies (and monument companies), crematoriums, flowers and so on (Brown, 2002). Added to this, in recent years, more
people are willing to discuss death and memorialization than they have been in the past (National Funeral Directors Association, 2003). As a result, the concept of death has become less
frightening, with the idea of preparation for death better accepted in this day and age. The media has added to this "openness" -
the HBO television series "Six Feet Under," a drama that details the goings-on in a fictitious, family-owned funeral home have helped make death and the death care industry much less
mysterious or frightening (National Funeral Directors Association, 2003). In addition, stories in magazines abound about brave people fighting life-threatening diseases, and how families deal with the deaths of these people.
Furthermore, memorialization became more open following the death of those in the 9-11 terrorist attacks (National Funeral Directors Association, 2003). In short, death isnt hidden behind much of anything anymore,
