and a warm day or two. The fruit fly was a menace to orchards, farmers, and posed numerous problems to the agricultural state of affairs for a long time. Who knew that this tiny pest may one day hold the entire key to decoding our own genetic sequences. Drosophila melanogaster is a very long name for a very little insect. Maturing to 3mm long, this type of fly is one that most people are familiar with, the kind that frequent spoiled fruit. Amazingly enough, this little fly has been the scientists best little friend as far as research is concerned and today, several thousand scientists are working on many different aspects of the fruit fly in order to determine applications for human genome study. Its importance for human health was recognised by the award of the Nobel prize in medicine/physiology to Ed Lewis, Christiane Nusslein-Volhard and Eric Wieschaus in 1995(Manning, 2002). Why study the fruit fly in the first place? Initially, scientists may have studied the fruit fly simply because they were researching a way to effectively annihilate it. However, upon closer study, scientists found that the fruit fly was ideal for the study of genetics. This was because it has the ability to reproduce quickly, has a short life span, and has a limited amount of chromosomes. Part of the reason people work on it is historical - so much is already known about it that it is easy to handle and well-understood - and part of it is practical: its a small animal, with a short life cycle of just two weeks, and is cheap and easy to keep large numbers(Manning, 2002). It was found that the flies ...
