Road Not Taken This quote from one of Robert Frosts most loved poems also summarizes, one can state, the poets fondness
for diverging from the long held traditional forms and structures of his contemporaries. But many, Lionel Trilling especially, stated that Frost was also a very terrifying poet. So, the question
becomes, then: Why does a Robert Frost poem read differently than any other poem? and What elements combine to create this poets terrifying voice?
One of the earliest and easiest answers, the student could mention, to this question is that Frost uses rhythm and meter in a way that is very conversational,
almost like prose or blank verse as opposed to the typical poem. In this conversational tone, he then intertwines the sense of helplessness and self-recrimination that pervades and underlies most
of his work, it can be said. If one looks closely, however, one begins to see that Frost is not trying to explain how nature works, he is using the
imagery to describe the inner landscape of the human soul. It is mans soul, then, that is helpless among all the creatures of nature, and as such, requires the use
of his mind and spirit working in tandem to overcome natures obstacles as well as the more primitive creatures on the Earth. Frost was a farmer. He was in tune
with the realities of nature and how harsh it could be. He would have seen nature as a force that had the capabilities of destroying people, but it is evident
that he also saw nature as the ultimate conflict for mankind. In many ways, Frosts poems are very much like the moralistic fable or moral tale, only his morality stories
