was nothing more than a bunch of 20-somethings moaning and complaining about the unfair deal that life gave them. Some critics noted that the only reason it had a chance of succeeding was because of the lead-in of the "Seinfeld" show, which preceded it. Many gave it a year, others thought it would be gone by mid-season. The show, however, surprised the nay-sayers by lasting not only past mid-season, but straight on into syndication, with the 2002-2003 season scheduled to be its last. Other than the fact that the cast is good looking, why would the show be such a hit? The main reason, likely as not, is the same reason why "Thirty-Something" resonated so strongly to those in their 30s during the 1980s and "Sex in the City" resonates with single and married women. "Friends" seems to tap into something within its audience, something that is very real. Its true that some of the plot lines in Friends are formulaic; the story centers around a small group of unmarried young men and women who flirt with one another, tease one another and fall in and out of love - sometimes with each other, some times with other people (Simon B5). The opening season episode was played more for laughs, as it involved Rachel, one of the group of friends, who had just escaped from her wedding because she realized she couldnt stand the man she was about to marry. The fact that she escaped and ended up (somehow) at Central Perk, the coffee shop where the friends hung out, was a little difficult to believe.
