or her patient. For example, in the arena of Freudian therapy, substance abuse is a sure sign of an id that is stronger than a superego, as the id is
the factor that demands self-gratification. The Jungian, in the meantime, focuses more on predisposition, partly if a parent abuses substances, and partly if, physically, a person has a genetic predisposition
toward metabolizing a particular substance in a particular way. For example, a person might have a predisposition toward being overweight because his or her parent was overweight, and the "ancestral"
code is passed on. The paper also describes how Jungian theory of the "soul" has been used to create 12-Step Programs to help in the area of addictions. In addition,
the paper addresses reasons for substance abuse, including the fact that it can physically feel good, the possibility of physical predisposition toward a particular substance and for emotional reasons. The
paper then concludes by indicating that theories are fine, however, its up to the mental health professional to determine, on a case-by-case basis, what the best way to treat substance
abuse is. Theories of Sigmund Freud When Sigmund Freud first introduced his theories of the subconscious during the late 19th
century and early 20th century, these theories were considered the "new truth" as they pertained to mental disorders (Sigmund Freuds Theories, 2002). The concept of gender differences (which embraced such
ideas as "penis envy" and the "Oedipus Syndrome") seemed to explain a great deal, even if they had many people scratching their heads (Sigmund Freuds Theories, 2002).
