aspects of our subconscious. These days, however, the field of mental health offers a variety of theories, some that work (and some
that dont). There is behavioral theory, for one, and the theory of choice, which is still somewhat prevalent today. In this
paper, the student has been asked to examine the theories of three prominent mental health professionals -- Sigmund Freud, Albert Ellis and William Glasser. Though these three men had different
ideas about the need to treat various mental illnesses, in examining these theories, we can certainly see how they built upon each other.
To do this, the student must clearly delineate the theories, explain them, then at the end, explain how these theories tend to play off each other and make up
the field of mental health today. Freud: The Father of Psychiatry Though the study of the mind was not exactly new
during the 19th century, Sigmund Freud managed to be one of the first to actually map the subconscious as a key to the motivations of mankind. Through his many theories,
Freud gave birth to a new field in mental examination known as psychoanalysis. Freuds many theories did two things. First, he defined
