In other words, the authors stay away from banking, economies, supply and demand, and focus on every-day things such as information control, drug dealing and even legalized abortion. Whats even more interesting about this book is that its co-written by a University of Chicago economist (Levitt); a school of economics not exactly known for its levity or "out of the box" thinking about the subject of economics. But the economists neo-classical background comes through as he treats each chapter, and each topic, with the idea of microeconomics 101, namely that all choices are rational, with the idea that the individual making the choices wants to gain the most utility from his/her decision. This, in fact, is the books central theme - no matter how off-the-wall a decision might be, the individual making it, for himself, is convinced that the decision is in the best interests of himself (versus that of the greater society). Though the authors point out in their introduction that the books central theme is "if morality represents how people would like the world to work, then economics shows how it actually does work (p. 5), the ultimate theme of this book is to point out how everything can be connected with microeconomics 101, namely, the choices that an individual makes to better his/her utility. This is seen as the authors weigh various "societal" issues, such as teachers inflating scores of standardized tests in Chicago elementary schools. The "benefits" of such an action are obvious for the teacher; if her students get good grades, she (the teacher) gets her bonus and accolades and, more importantly, she doesnt lose her job.
