Delano Roosevelt, who was elected as President of the United States in 1932 was definitely a leader of the times. Though he was a controversial leaders (as many people liked
him as hated him), few can deny the impact he had on the decade. He took the reigns of the highest office in the land during a time when the
nation was struggling economically, jobs were scarce and hope was lost. By pushing several controversial measures through as part of his "New Deal" package, he may not have helped or
hindered recovery, but he did provide citizens with hope, which had been sorely lacking since the market had crashed in 1929. Furthermore, though a blueblood Mainliner from Pennsylvania, Roosevelt was
in touch with the "common people," a bond that was further solidified through his fireside chats. Talk to an elderly person today about the Great Depression and the fireside chats,
and that person will likely talk about the inspiration of those chats. In examining Roosevelts leadership qualities it would be a good
idea to focus on Gardners 14 Leadership Attributes. These attributes are physical vitality/stamina; intelligence/action-oriented judgment; eagerness to accept responsibility; task competence; understanding followers and their needs; people skills; need for
achievement; capacity to motivate; courage and resolution; trustworthiness; decisiveness; self-confidence; assertiveness and adaptability/flexibility. Roosevelt had many of these attributes (depending on
who is talking about him, he had all of them). But the three he is likely most known for is his understanding of his followers needs, motivational skills and decisiveness.
