it something deeper? Dr. Frankenstein creates his monster out of spare parts found in a morgue. What he brings to life, he swears has no soul. But does it? Shelley
gives ample evidence to support that not only does the monster possess a soul, but that in many ways, he is more moral and compassionate than his creator. One of
the first acts which show that the monster is more than biological action and reaction is his desire to communicate. He has a need to belong, to feel included. If
he were merely an animal, this desire would run toward survival at any cost. Yet, the monsters first action is to attempt to connect on some level with those around
him. When this is rebuffed, his frustration turns deadly. Another example of the depth of character of the monster is his capacity for love and compassion. This is illustrated in
his care and conversations with the old blind man who teaches him to read and understand the classic literature. It is in his reading of the mythological tale of Prometheus
that he begins to understand what an abomination he is and that he is all alone. He understands that he is an unnatural act against creation and nature. He becomes
bitter. His ability to learn and apply abstract concepts shows that he has reasoning skills, but also the capability to feel emotional distress. Eventually, this loneliness turns to bitterness
and anger and the monster decides to demand a mate from his creator. When he confronts Dr. Frankenstein, the scientist agrees, but wracked with guilt from his first mistrial, and
fearing that he may produce an even worse version than before and that there may be scads of misbegotten children, he scraps the project and throws away the parts. When
