Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer Course), which involves rigorous advanced communication training. Ladies, gentlemen and new graduates, its an honor for me to be
here before you today. When I was first asked to say a few remarks to this graduating class, I was a little concerned. After all, what on earth could I
communicate to a graduating class that is involved in . . . well, communications? Ill be honest; this was a somewhat intimidating task for me. I appreciate all of
you bearing with me. Ill try not to drone on for too long and I will try to make this interesting. Youve all had very intense training; its been
a long and difficult road . . . and I dont want to keep you from the celebrations you no doubt have planned.
You all are in a special graduating class; the sesquicentennial of the Signal Corps founding. Thats right, on June 21, 1860, Congress authorized the appointment of one signal officer
in the Army, a post that was held by Albert J. Myer, an assistant surgeon. These days, the Corps is thousands strong. Weve come a long way from Dr. Myers
day in more than just numbers. Were a long ways away from the flags and torches of those early years. The Corps has grown right alongside the growth of communications
technology. We saw those semaphore flags give way to the telegraph which, in turn, gave way to radio communications and radar. Eventually, we saw the advent of mobile telephones, computerized
