is a literary technique that takes events from an earlier part of a story and hints at later events. John Steinbecks novel, Of Mice and Men is full of foreshadowing which lends to the sense of impending doom which pervades the novel. In John Steinbecks novel, Of Mice and Men, the tale shows the relationship between two men who are friends. In fact, it can be said that they have been together so long that they need one another in order to be whole people. The novel takes place during the Great Depression and it finds the two friends, Lennie and George looking for work at a ranch in California. They have just had to leave their last place of employment because Lennie, who is slightly mentally slow, was wrongly accused of rape. As the story unfolds, the friendship is tested many times. Each time, even when frustrated, George comes to Lennies rescue. All they have ever wanted was a piece of land to farm and call their own; where Lennie can be as big and dumb and strong as he wants to be. Fate has other things in store for Lennie and in the end, it can be said that their friendship is tested one last time(Starett 20). One of the most blatant uses of foreshadowing is when Candy has to shoot his dog because it bit the Boss. Candy says that a man shouldnt let a stranger shoot his dog. In this way, the reader feels that in some way one of the characters is going to be forced to do something terrible, but that it would be a more merciful act than letting a stranger do it.
