This has especially true in the National Football League (NFL), the league that has created a plethora of African-American superstars yet nevertheless, has a dismal record when it comes to hiring African-Americans to head coaching positions. To try to rectify the situation, the NFL ended up, during the summer of 2003, initiating a diversity policy by which team owners would be required to talk to at least one black prospect when interviewing to fill for a head coaching job. The purpose for this (called "Rooneys Rule" after Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney, who just happened to head up the Workplace Diversity Committee that initiated the idea in the first place) was to provide more opportunities for black prospects to be considered for head coaching jobs. Never mind that the black prospects in question may not have the necessary experience that their white counterparts have; never mind that the rule is basically a token gesture to help stem the ire of a couple of lawyers who enjoy playing the racist card at every opportunity -- just the fact that they need to be interviewed is enough. Yet is it just to have such a rule in place? Furthermore is a just for a professional football team to be fined, simply because the owners dont talk to a black prospect for the job? On the surface, Rooneys Rule tries to be about inclusion and diversity and opportunity.
